CLEAN BEAUTY part 1 - the 80/20 rule

What is this? A break from the cooking crusade? Why yes, my favorite reader, it is. I made a New Year’s resolution to clean up my beauty routine and I thought it would be fun to document the process here…and it would probably help keep me accountable. And who doesn’t love a little resolution accountability, eh?!

Long story short, I have no idea how to “do makeup.” Like, I still apply foundation with my fingers. I have been given a lot of makeup from brands as gifts or testers from various campaigns and mostly I have to watch YouTube videos to figure out what to do with it (like wtf is this whole “baking” technique?!) and a lot of it ends up just sitting in bins under the bathroom sink. This winter I went down a war path  (it is currently still happening) to purge our house of all the extra shit we have laying around. No closet, cabinet, drawer, or shelf is safe from my rampage. And that brings us to todays post – clean beauty.

We are all obsessed with ingredients in our food and it is pouring over into what we put on our skin. After spending a good 12 hours researching ingredients for this post, I can say with utter certainty that my beauty routine is about to get a whole lot cleaner. No more shark fats, parabens, guano (ie bat poop) phthalates, or other unpronounceable mystery ingredients are going on this skin any time soon.

Below I take a look at every beauty product that I own and rate it based on EWG & Think Dirty’s clean ingredient rating system. Both are free apps and both have pros and cons, but I like them and think when used together they paint a pretty good picture of what you are working with. The goal is to get 80% of my beauty products to have a clean rating (0-3 on both Think Dirty’s & EWG’s scale) while the other 20% can be in the 50/50 range. I know, I know, why not just go all the way? Who knows, maybe I will, but I have got to be honest, there are some really shitty clean mascaras out there, so I am leaving a little wiggle room.

Each product has a rating and a verdict, and all the products are tallied up at the end. Ideally, I want to switch these out over the next couple of months and do a little monthly recap on what works, what doesn’t, and progress made – what do you think?! Here’s to cutting out the clutter and cleaning up our act!

PERFUME:

COMMODITY:

Delicious, smokey, moody, and ooh so mysterious – I do love the fragrance wardrobe Commodity has built. That being said, how do they stand up to our dirty test? According to an interview with Commodity co-founders, their fragrance ingredients are sustainably sourced and paraben, phthalate, gluten free, and cruelty free. Since bringing on a new director in 2016, they have migrated their fragrances to become more sustainable and clean whenever possible…so do with that information what you will.

PHLUR:

My first “clean” fragrance and I AM OBSESSED. They don’t use harmful ingredients, are cruelty-free, proceeds from every fragrance go back to organizations committed to conservation, and they even have sustainable packaging. Read all about their story here. PLUS, they are based in my old stomping ground, Austin, TX, so I have en extra special love for them.

DESIGNER SAMPLES:

I love these little guys because they are great to throw in a gym bag, purse, or travel bag and voila! You’ve got options that won’t weigh you down or get you stuck in the TSA line. BUUUUUT, after reading all about how fragrances are some of the dirtiest products out there…I am rethinking my love. After a little research, I discovered that perfume ingredients are protected under the U.S. Fair Packaging and Label Act because they are considered trade secrets, and thus, do not need to be disclosed – lovely.

There is a ton of literature on perfumes and fragrances, all of which are a quick Google search away – so read at your leisure. That being said, I will be ditching these little guys and swapping them out for something much cleaner.

FACE:

VICHY Normaderm:

I read about this face wash in an Into the Gloss article about French girl skin care and was like, mmm yes please. But after a quick ingredient scan, my yes please has become a NO THANK YOU! According to EWG, this product poses a moderate concern for ingredient safety. While it rates a 9 (10 being the worst) on Think Dirty’s Dirty Meter for “Developmental & reproductive toxicity.” YIKES.

BIO-OIL:

I picked this up at Target after reading about how it helps reduce scars and have honestly, never really used it. It just seemed really oily…which, yes I know it was oil, but it was like thick oil…any way, I didn’t use it and turns out, that was probably for the best. According to Think Dirty’s Dirty Meter, this product rates a 9/10 due to fragrance and posses a developmental & reproductive toxicity. no bueno.

POREspective Enzyme Mask:

When we lived in Austin, I had the most fantastic aesthetician – Alissa from POREspecitve – and she truly turned my skin around. I literally cried on her table and she was wonderful and amazing, and if you are in Austin, I cannot recommend her enough. She hooked me up with this Enzyme Mask and while it’s not rated on Think Dirty or EWG, I’ve researched all the ingredients and they all come up clean and clear – phew!

FRESH SUGAR LIP POLISH:

For these nasty Chicago winters, lip exfoliants are a must. While my trusty apps didn’t have ratings for this specific lip polish, the individual ingredients used in Fresh’s Sugar Lip Polish rated about 50/50 – half clean, half not so clean.

ADVANCED CLINICALS RAPID LIFT:

So, I have no idea if this stuff actually works, but I like to think it does. It is an anti-aging eye serum that I put around my outer eyes and forehead (the back of the tube says you can) and I like to think that it helps fight the good fight against wrinkles. That being said, I might have to find an alternative option. EWG & Think Dirty don’t have any ratings for the Rapid Lift, they do however have ratings for other Advanced Clinicals products and they are straight up nooooo bueno.

BURT’S BEE’S FACIAL CLEANING TOWELETTES:

As much as I would love to be one of those gals who always washes her face before bed every night…I am not. I am working on it! It is actually a 2018 resolution of mine (don’t laugh), but that is where these bad boys come in handy. They are great to get the grime off and act as a quick face wash substitute for when I just can’t.

BEAUTYCOUNTER BRIGHTENING + VITAMIN C FACIAL MIST:

So we all know that Beautycounter is a leader in the whole clean beauty movement, and for good reason! They have helped educate a ton of people (including me) on why certain ingredients are bad, why the government regulations are archaic and kinda effed, and they just put a lot of care, effort, and research into what they are putting in their products. And their Founder & CEO is a woman and I just really like that. This Brightening + Vitamin C set was a gift and I have to be honest, I don’t use this a ton. I use the oil a lot more, but the mist makes me feel kind of like…wtf am I doing? Is this what a makeup person does? Am I a makeup person now? Let that stand as proof to how cool and skincare savvy I am…

BEAUTYCOUNTER BRIGHTENING + VITAMIN C FACIAL OIL:

Okay, the oil – love this guy. I was using Kiehl’s oil but then I EWG’ed it and was like HOLY EFF THIS IS BAD and then I remembered I had this and was like OKAY I WILL SWITCH IT OUT. So that’s my story with this guy. It apparently helps with sun spots (don’t think I have those?)

HERBIVORE BLUE TANSY:

Herbivore is an ethically based, natural skin care line that was recommended to me a long time ago and this is again, another product that I don’t really use. But based on the reviews, recommendations, and ingredients list – I absolutely need to! Herbivore lists all of the ingredients in every product they produce on their website (which is amazing) and promises that every ingredient is food-grade, safe, non-toxic, and basically clean af. None of the Herbivore products are on Think Dirty or EWG apps, but based on the research I have done on the ingredients, this little masks is in the clear!

SUPERGOOP! LIP SUNSCREEN:

I bought this for when we were going to Cuba and I am realizing that I don’t use half of the shit that I have in my beauty arsenal. I mean, I have used this once or twice (mainly while we were in Havana) but living in Chicago doesn’t really give you a lot of reason to bust out the ol’ lip screen, know what I mean. That being said, this is some pretty clean block, so I am just going to go ahead and throw all the other junk away.

SUPERGOOP! EVERY DAY SUNSCREEN (50 SPF):

Ditto above.

Think Dirty gives this a 5 out of 10 because of the MYRISTYL ALCOHOL ingredient. Basically, it is a binding agent that bonds oil and aqua substances. It is considered safe and a low possible carcinogen…

POND’S COLD CREAM:

I haven’t used this guy in many months and after reading about it’s toxicity report, I can’t throw this container away fast enough…

Think Dirty rates this product as dirty as it gets because of fragrance (9/10) and DMDM HYDANTOIN (10/10). DMDM is basically a formaldehyde releasing agent (ew) and can trigger eczema and is a know carcinogen. Duly noted. *throws cream into trash*

EWG rates this guy as a moderate concern overall, but high concern for allergies and immunotoxicity. EWG states, “HIGH concerns: Endocrine disruptionContamination concernsIrritation (skin, eyes, or lungs)” So yea, let’s jut give that *throws cream into trash* a big fat diiiiiitttto.

NARS:

I have wanted to love this lip gloss for a long time, but I just don’t think I have the complexion. I think you need more olive in your skin for this to work, luckily it’s an easy product to replace with a cleaner option which brings me one step closer to the 80/20 goal.

BURT’S BEE’S (SCARLET SOAKED):

Okay, so what is the deal…I really thought Burt’s Bee’s was going to be a lot cleaner than a 5/10. Especially on EWG, which I am learning is the more conservative of the apps. While I love this red, I have to think about whether it goes in the ‘keep’ or ‘toss’ pile.

TOM FORD (SOMETHING WILD):

My wallet and lipstick bag (yes, I have a separate bag for lipstick…and yes it weirdly looks like a wallet) got stolen last year and I have been slowly replenishing my haul ever since. While I adore this color, it gets a nasty wrap because of all of the fragrance used. Which I get, because there is some funky stuff in fragrance ingredients and we are talking about lipstick here, which means you are probably going to eat it at some point, so…maybe it is not the best idea to eat funky fragrance chemicals. Bye bye Tommy.

DAVINES DRY TEXTURIZER SPRAY:

Well, I love this this spray but I couldn’t find it on EWG or Think Dirty. Davines has recently re-worked a lot of their formulas to include sustainable ingredients, which eco their commitment to sustainable packaging. That being said, the company rates between a 4-8 on EWG’s scale, so we are going to be conservative and put this spray in to 50/50 category.

NOT YOUR MOTHER’S DRY SHAMPOO:

ehhh gahd. Well, basically this is a whole ton of really toxic fragrances all mixed together in one really funky concoction. Needless to say, this sucker is in the trash. Got any dry shampoo suggestions? Girl needs some help.

DAVINES NATURALTECH NOURISHING SHAMPOO:

I love this shampoo for cold Chicago days when your hair needs a little extra love. The formula is nice and creamy and it just feels like a mask for your hair and especially when used in tandem with the Nourishing Conditioner – it really feels like a spa day. And while it doesn’t have the best (nor the worst) rating on EWG, the concerns are mainly allergy related and not cancer — which is always a plus.

DAVINES SOLU SHAMPOO:

Okay, so yeah, I am going to go ahead and just throw this the eff out. I started using Davines because it is an environmentally sustainable company, but after some research, their ingredients are less than lovely. EWG gives them a moderate to high overall usage hazard and with ratings like these i am outta here.

MARVIS TOOTHPASTE:

I think I picked up every tube of this toothpaste while we were in France. They were in all the Pharmacies and I JUST COULDN’T HELP MYSELF! Look at them, they are so cute and so French! EWG gives them about a 4/10 with some allergy concerns, while Think Dirty gives them a 10/10 due to three fragrance ingredients. I would list them but they have about a million letters in each of them and honestly, the app’s explanation of the ingredients is way better than my paraphrasing.

AESOP HAND SOAP:

If you want your bathroom to feel fancy AF, Aesop is the way to go. Our apartment in Paris was stocked with Aesop and since I love anything and everything that makes me feel even slightly French, this was a “must have” when we came back to Chicago. While neither Think Dirty or EWG have ratings for Aesop products (that I could find), I can say that no Aesop products have parabens (which is a great thing) and their ingredients have been reviewed by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Panel (CIRP) and found safe for use.

SMITH & CULT NAIL POLISH:

While EWG or Think Dirty don’t have ratings for Smith & Cult (that I could find), I have to give this one the “clean!” pass because their are 5-free. Meaning, they are free of dibutyl phthalate (DBP), toluene, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, and camphor – which are some of the biggest dirty offenders found most commonly in nail polish.

BURT’S BEE’S BODY LOTION:

When I began dipping my toe into this whole clean beauty pool, I thought everything that Burt’s Bee’s produced was clean, clean, clean. After all, they tote that their products are paraben, phthalates, and petrolatum (SLS) free – and not knowing what 2/3rds of those ingredients were, I thought, well, yea okay…phthaltes sound bad, so I went with the Burt’s Bee’s option. But after looking a little longer at their ingredients list, it turns out that Burt isn’t as clean as I thought after all…

Think Dirty gives this a 50% due to it’s use of PHENOXYETHANOL, or in other words, a common preservative used in cosmetics. Actually kind of surprising for Burt’s Bee’s  – don’t you think?

EWG gives it a 50% as well, but for it’s high allergy concern due to their use of fragrance ingredients.

THIEVES MOUTHWASH:

Have you ever heard of this? It is a relatively new product in Young Living’s (yes, the essential oil company) cleaning line, Thieves. I was given their cleaning concentrate solution, toothpaste, and mouthwash as a gift, and truthfully, haven’t used the mouthwash much. Young Living claims that Thieves products are non-toxic, free of alcohol, synthetic dyes, and artificial flavors. And based on all of the research I have done, I have no reason to doubt the claim.

TOM’S DEODORANT (LEMONGRASS):

I have tried just about every natural deodorant on the market, some with more success than others, but I always have a Tom’s in my “back up bin” under the bathroom sink. EWG says that this deodorant posses a moderate concern due to ingredient safety and has a high allergy concern. Some of the ingredients tip toe the 50/50 line, but overall it is a good option for a cleaner deodorant.

MEOW MEOW TWEET BODY LOTION:

I absolutely adore this company. They are a small-batch skin care company that makes vegan products with pure, all natural and organic ingredients. All products are made with organic, unrefined plant oils and butters, steam-distilled and cold-pressed essential oils and organic and wild-crafted botanicals. EWG & Think Dirty don’t have ratings on them because they are a small company, but I highly (HIGHLY) recommend checking them out

MAKEUP:

NEUTROGENA NOURISHING LONG WEAR MAKEUP:

This has served as my back-up coverup in my “back up bin” under the bathroom sink. It’s not my primary but it is also nice because it is a shade lighter than I normally wear, so it’s nice to have a slightly lighter shade for when my skin is really nice and pasty in those winter months.

So, overall EWG says this product has a modern concern for sun protection and  ingredient safety — which is maybe slightly concerning. And Think Dirty shows a handful of ingredients at 50/50…so overall, not the best, not the worst.

NARS BLUSH (ORGASM):

As far as the look of this blush, it’s stunning. It’s got a lovely gold shimmer in it & it is just stunning on the skin. As for what is in the blush…maybe less than orgasmic (sorry! I had to!) EWG doesn’t love this stuff and flags it high for allergy, immunotoxicity, and developmental concerns. Think Dirty on the other hands, hates this blush because of it’s use of BUTYLPARABEN – a preservative and used in fragrances. Also, I don’t know if you know this, but the problem with parabens is that they mimic estrogen and can cause hormonal disruptions…

TARTE FACE PALETTE (CLAY PLAY):

I adore this palette…well, as much as you can love a palette that you only use like 1/3rd of, but hey, I am just becoming a makeup person, so what do I know? Tarte products rate between a 4-6 on both EWG & Think Dirty and since I can’t find any rating on the face palette, we are going to give this guy a 50/50. I DRANK COLLAGEN and heres what happened

collagen
If I was a betting gal, it would be easy money to say that you and everyone you know is taking about collagen. It’s the latest super supplement and it’s popping up on every heathy list imaginable – but what is it all about?

I wanted to see what all the hype was about, so naturally I dove right in, headfirst, and went gangbusters for a week. I ate, drank, gargled (jk, I didn’t do that), and breathed collagen (by only by accident because I sneezed while scooping some out….oops) and there are legit some amazing benefits…

Here is why everyone is loving collagen:

Great for your bones, joints, and muscles

Helps with digestion & is great for anyone with acid reflux, IBS, or leaky gut

Does wonders for your skin (goodbye wrinkles), teeth, nails, and hair

And, rumor has it, it supports a healthy nights sleep

After doing some research, I ordered Dr. Axe’s Multi-Collagen Protein and started adding two scoops to my morning smoothies. This particular mix is a high-quality blend of bovine, chicken, fish, and egg collagens, providing collagen Types I, II, III, V and X (hence, “multi” collagen).Types I and III are amazing for your skin, hair, and nails while Type II collagen, which  supports gut health, joint health and healthy immune system function.

This mix is great because it’s super high quality, easy to absorb, tasteless, and has absolutely no smell (which, to me, is a big win). Smoothies are a super easy way to work collagen in, but I have also mixed it in to my cup of tea in the evening, and lots of people use collagen in their recipes!

I’ve been drinking collagen for about two weeks now and I can tell that their is a difference in my skin, energy levels, and my hair feels more healthy. It’s so easy to work in to my morning routine and with noticeable results in such a short time, it’s definitely become a beloved part of my health regime.

What do you think? Would you try working collagen in to your routine?

ELIMINATING TOXINS IN YOUR BATHROOM ROUTINE

Did you know that your skin is your biggest organ? Now think about all the junk you put on your skin – soap, shampoo, conditioner, scrubs, lotions, deodorant – it’s a lot! Now think about how much you know about all those products? Are they organic? Paraben free? What even is a paraben?

I have had terrible skin since I can remember. Terrible spots, flakes, the works. From 13 to almost 30, it doesn’t get easier to deal with. BUT, a few great things have come out of having shit skin, I have tested almost every product on the market and have become a total nutter about researching the isht out of what I am putting on my body. That nuttiness has migrated from purely facial products to just about everything that falls under ‘bath and beauty.’

There is a crap load of funky stuff floating around in your products that you probably don’t even think about because it’s in a pretty package (I am so, so guilty of this) or because it’s sold at a certain store, and it could be affecting your whole body, not just your skin.

Now I know re-stocking isn’t cheap, but I am taking on one room a month and figuring out what stays and what goes. Join me and take an hour out of your night and go through your bathroom cabinets. Pull out all the product from your shower, under the cabinets, all those samples, and even those bins you keep in the back full of half used bottles and tubes. Grab a trash bin and toss out anything that has the following:

BHA and BHT (commonly found in moisturizers)

MEA, DEA, & TEA  (or monoethanolamine, diethanolamine, and triethanolamine)

P-phenylenediamine (coal tar dye) and anything with CI, FD&C, or D&C followed by a five-digit number (found in hair dye or colored products)

Parabens (found in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products)

Dibutyl phthalate (found in nail polish)

Methenamine or Hexamethylenetetramine (found in eye makeup, as well as shampoo and hair conditioners)

If you want help or more guidelines, try downloading Think Dirty or EWG’s Healthy Living. Both apps allow you to scan your products to see where your products rates on the dirty/clean scale.

This week I am taking on my bathroom products. I’ve thrown out a ton of lotions, funky soaps, and countless samples. Here is a list of clean (or more clean) products that I’ve swapped out. Okay, from left to right…

Lime & Coconut Salty Scrub

Palermo Charcoal Soap Bar

Meow Meow Tweet Natural Deodorant

Goodwell Toothbrush

Pacific Mint Toothpaste

Meow Meow Tweet Body Lotion

Ritual Vitamins

What products do you love? I am always on the hunt to clean up my routines & would love to know your favorites <3

Stay tuned for posts on clean lipsticks, beauty products, and lots of other swaps. Here’s to clean cleaning!

TRANSITION TO THOUGHTFUL BEAUTY PRODUCTS

img_4225

In our transition to all things ‘thoughtful living,’ we are making an effort to ditch our normal beauty products that for a regime that is much more friendly. Out with the weird ingredients, in with natural ingredients, stuff we can pronounce, and things that help repair our skin. Ya dig?First up – charcoal…okay, okay, and a little bit of coffee.

I have been on the charcoal train for a few months now & I am obsessed with every single on of these products. The Clinique gel & scrub are a part of my daily routine and every Sunday, during my little me-time pamper session, I bust out the mask & coffee scrub. All totally affordable & products that don’t break me out..and I don’t say that lightly because we all know what shit skin I used to have. So, party people, pour that glass of wine and let’s get to at-home spa-ing!

FRANK BODY SCRUB – i.e. the most amazing scrub ever

This is, and I mean it, the best body scrub around. It’s totally affordable, lasts forever, and smells amazing. I use this every other day (I even pack a little pouch of it in my gym bag) and my skin is constantly baby’s butt smooth. Plus, it cuts down on cellulite and eczema and a bunch of other beneficial stuff. I use it because it smells amazing and does wonders for my sluffy Chicago skin. Get it, you won’t regret it!

BOSCIA CHARCOAL MASK – basically magic

Again, another product I can’t live without. While it does make you look like Darth Vader when it’s on, it’s amazing and leaves your skin feeling all silky smooth. For $8 a pop, these are a totally affordable treat once or twice a month. Boscia has a bunch of different treatments – like sake or green tea – but the charcoal is my favorite.

CLINIQUE CHARCOAL CLEANSING GEL

This is a new addition to the bunch, but I am really liking it. It cleanses my skin without drying it out, gets rid of the makeup & city grim, and leaves my face feeling fresh and comfortable. Clinique is a brand I keep coming back to because their products are gentle and way less harmful then other cleansers.

CLINIQUE CHARCOAL CITY BLOCK MASK

Sister, if you are looking for a good mud mask, this is it. I love it, I love it, I love it. It’s a scrub and a mask and it’s so good. It is great for a weekly mask, won’t dry your skin out, and has a nice little scrub at the end. I use this puppy once a week and my skin has never felt better. Plus, the natural bamboo charcoal and kaolin clay help remove pollution and impurities, while natural silica beads gently refine texture. Pretty nifty!

CLEAN UP YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE 4 simple steps to a healthier you

Healthy living- we all strive to do it on the regular and for the most part, you’re getting pretty good at choosing whole foods and cutting the junk and you’ve got the yoga thing down, but if you’re still not feeling like a million bucks, you may be missing a piece of the puzzle. A big piece!

Healthy living is about far more than just nourishing your body with nutrients and movement – it’s about cultivating healthy relationships, joyful and mindful living, plenty of good sleep and in today’s world, creating a less toxic living environment.

As woman, we may slather a handful or more pricey beauty products all over our bodies before we even leave the house in the morning, many of which may contain toxic ingredients that have been linked to serious health issues like hormonal imbalances, fertility issues, and even cancer. Yah, I went there.

Cleansing your beauty routine can be just as important as cleansing that beautiful bod. In fact, think about it this way- what’s the point of detoxing if you continue to put the junk in?

Here are a few simple ways to cleanse your beauty routine and really rock out the healthy life…

READ THE LABEL:

Just like when you’re grocery shopping, reading the labels on your skin care products can tell you a lot about what’s inside. Watch out for pthalates, sodium laurel/laureth sulfate, fragrance, and parabens, to name a few. Primally Pure is a great example of label purity. Their Deodorant, Lavender + Sage Body Butter and Fancy Face Serum are the real deal. Let’s just say you could literally eat your deodorant if it came down to it.

CHOOSE A SAFE SKIN CARE BRAND:

Choosing a non-toxic option doesn’t mean you can only use crushed rose petals and coconut oil. Beautycounter, one of my favs, has banned over 1,500 ingredients from their makeup and skin care line and are leading the safe skincare movement. The best part- their products actually perform. Their Lip Sheer, Charcoal Cleansing Bar and Balancing Face Oil are must-haves!

DIY IT:

A super simple and affordable way to cleanse your beauty routine is by making a few products on your own (think mouthwash, body butter and deodorant for the brave!). Adding pure essential oils like lavender, frankincense, and melaleuca can up your DIY beauty game big time! They have natural cleansing and beautifying properties and smell a-mazing! Hello home spa!

STOCK UP SLOWLY:

Depending on your current beauty routine, switching over to safe skincare products can be pricey. An easy way to make the transition more affordable is to stock up on products as you run out, one by one. But if you’re ready to take the non-toxic plunge, dive right in girl!

One of my favorite ways to check out how my current products are ranking in terms of purity is through the Environmental Working Group. Plug your fav products into their new app, “Healthy Living”, to see their safety ratings

AN ODE TO BARE-FACED BEAUTY

howtobeachhair_031Hey y’all! Courtney here. When it comes to makeup, I’m one of those gals who tends to think less is more, and adapts the “natural beauty is timeless and classic” sort of mentality. But besides that, and the fact that I’d much rather get a couple extra minutes of sleep or meditation in the morning than spend my time in front of a mirror, minimal makeup is – believe it or not – a fashion statement (if you want it to be). Think about it! The amount of makeup you wear is absolutely parallel to your sense of style, all you have to do is wear it with confidence. So – as an ode to bare-faced beauty – here’s three tips that are guaranteed to make your face both bold and beautiful without all the extra maquillage.

1) EXFOLIATE THE SKIN

Facial masks have been a cosmetic staple of mine for as long as I can remember. And it’s not just because I feel pampered and semi-compelled to cut up a cucumber and… well, you know the rest! It’s because they’re one of the easiest at-home solutions to achieving healthy and supple skin. Whether you use a cream, cotton sheet (my favorite! they’re portable, doused in a serum-based formula, and packed full of vitamins and amino acids) or clay mask, target one area over another, or need a deep cleanse for your whole face, one easy application provides an array of long-lasting benefits. They hydrate and detoxify the skin, remove excess oils, increase circulation, replenish nutrients, improve the appearance of your pores – the list goes on! Sit back, relax, and de-stress with a calming face mask after work or right before you go to bed, and sleep better knowing that you’re doing your skin a huge favor.

2) MAINTAIN THOSE BROWS

Maintaining a strong brow shape is key to accentuating your eyes (also, if you don’t own an eyelash curler, get one!) and making your face stand out. Science has even proved it’s your most important facial feature! So give your brows a little extra TLC, and start by avoiding waxing as it destroys the sensitive skin. Try tweezing or threading instead, but don’t forget to embrace your natural shape if you’re doing it yourself! If your brows are thin or sparse, try using a daily serum to help them grow. Now, here’s the fun part! Use an eyebrow gel to add definition and create the perfect arch, apply the right color powder or pencil, and use a spoolie brush to blend the two for a natural and symmetrical final touch. Sculpting beautiful brows are essential to getting that natural, gorgeous look! And face it: they’re trendy as hell.

3) DRINK WATER & EAT WELL

This may come off as obvious to some, but I know so many people who neglect the indispensable benefits of drinking water and eating healthy – and having great, glowing skin is one of them! After all, your appearance is a reflection of your health, right? Make sure your fridge is full of fruits and veggies, wholesome fats and proteins like seafood, eggs, and beans (to name a few), and don’t take water for granted! Buy a nalgene bottle, fill it up every day and make it a habit to never leave the house without it. They say drinking eight 8 oz glasses a day is best, but I believe the amount depends on the person, their activity level, etc. So my advice is to drink as much as you need to maintain clear urine! Leading a healthy lifestyle will get rid of toxins, emphasize your natural beauty, and make you feel more confident than ever!
Don’t get me wrong. Makeup is fun (I love bold lipsticks and enjoy playing around with different styles, colors and brands) but it shouldn’t be obligatory! Plus – the hot summer days approaching are as good an excuse as any to ditch the face paint. So if you’re thinking about cutting back, turn to these three tips for a little more organic guidance and enjoy the liberation!

ACNE, AT-HOME PEEL PADS, & MY SKIN WIZARD

IMG_4489Real talk, I used to have terrible (terrible) skin. Ask any roommate I had in college. I would lather layers and layers of cover-up on and try any peel, mask, or toner. Oh, you happened to be selling the latest skin regimen? Great, I’ll take 12 bottles. My skin was so bad that when I smiled it would crack and bleed. Which is really cool and totally not embarrassing at all. It got so bad that I developed this weird way to laugh so I didn’t have to smile – I would open my mouth slightly and make this really weird robot laugh sound. It was horrible & not to mention terrifying.

Anywho, I had atrocious skin for about five years in my late teens & early twenties until I found an actual skin wizard. It was a freak run in that it resulted in me crying in her chair, but she turned my skin around, removed the scars, and continues to keep my skin in fantastic shape. If you are a) looking for a new skin guru (don’t worry, she FaceTimes) b) need an at-home treatment you can count on or c) want to empathize with having shitty skin – this post is for you.

IMG_4481This skin wizard is named Alissa & runs an amazing studio – Porespective – based in Austin, Texas, but the best part is that she FACETIMES! It’s amazing. Plus, if you can’t get yourself down to Austin (although if you are struggling to clear up your skin, she is absolutely worth the trip) she just developed these insane Peel Pads that I can’t get enough of.

It’s a clinical grade peel that contains everything you need to brighten up that skin and get rid of acne from the comfort of your own bedroom. I use mine twice a month and it makes my skin look noticeably brighter and more clear. From the comfort of my sofa, I get an at-home medical treatment for literally a fraction of the price.

Not that the price (or ease) matters, because taking care of your skin is always worth it. It’s more the fact that great skin care is available without the flashy price tag, weird storm trooper light mask, or pain.

IMG_4473As someone who takes the care of their skin very seriously, I would not lead you astray on this front. If you are looking for someone to help turn your skin around, Alissa is your gal. If you are looking for an at-home treatment that won’t break the bank but that has legit results, these Peel Pads are the way to go.

Do you have an acne story and want to share? I am all ears. I know it can sound like such a vain thing, “I have such terrible skin!” But it really can keep you back from relationships, jobs, opportunities, and cripples your self-confidence. Girl, I’ve been there.

CLEAN UP YOUR MAKEUP ROUTINE

spring makeupHi friends! Joanna here & get excited – we are overhauling your beauty arsenal today. Spring cleaning isn’t just for your closet, ladies! I’m going to help you dig through your trusty makeup bag to help you swap out some of your tried-and-true products for new light and airy options that will help you transition into summer without total confusion.

FIRST & FOREMOST, LET’S TALK ABOUT SKIN

The winter can do some major damage to your skin, so be sure to continue exfoliating at least every other night. If you are in need of some heavier action, add a toner to your morning routine. Apply the toner after cleansing and before moisturizing.
Now that we have your skin clean and glowing, swap out your heavy creams for a lighter moisturizer. Try a product that will quickly absorb into your skin. These type of moisturizers will allow your skin to breath easier in warmer & more humid weather conditions.

GET THAT HEALTHY GLOW

With the warmer temps and more sun exposure, we all want to let our skin shine, but not without a bit of coverage 😉  Switch out your full coverage foundation to a BB cream for a lighter application. Most of the BB creams I have found have SPF in them. You can mix the BB cream with a bronzer or highlighter to provide a more sun-kissed glow to ease your way into a bronzer summer.

PRETTY UP THAT POUT

Given the fact that you will be sporting some new sunnies most of this season, skip the four-step eyeshadow palette and grab a cream eyeshadow stick. These are super quick and easy to apply. You can even just blend them in with your finger. Use it all over your lid or just around your lash line for slight definition.

PRO TIP:  grab a color that is complementary to your eye color, that way no matter what you are wearing it will be the most flattering color on you.

Time to brighten up that pout! Don’t be afraid of testing out some new bold lip colors. With fresh and soft makeup, a pop of color on your lips is such a beautiful spring look. Ditch the tubes of lipstick which may or may not melt in your purse while at the beach… and go try a lip pencil! These products are so easy to apply, they offer a lipliner and lipstick in one product and typically are very long wearing.

DOUBLE DUTCH BRAIDS from gym to the office

IMG_2742The argument for waking up a bit earlier to style and “do” my hair in the morning just has never been that compelling. Maybe because I prefer a bit for of a tousled look, or maybe just because I’ve never really known how to style my hair well, either way, I am always on the lookout for quick & easy hairstyles that will get me out the door on time and one that I don’t have to keep fixing all day.

We just started playing around with the Double Dutch Braids and I am obsessed. Remember that braided crown we did a while ago? Well, it’s the same braiding technique, but this time we are braiding straight down the back of your head instead of around. Basically, it’s half the work & you can do this on the train to work in the morning – yes, it really is that simple!

Perfect for the gym & adorable for work, we have a feeling this is going to be your favorite no muss, no fuss hairstyle this season. Still unsure about how to master the Double Dutch braids? We’ve called in one of our favorite stylists from StylistedChristina Gauthier – to show us how!

IMG_2639THE STEP BY STEP

1. Start with a clean part that extends all the way down your head. Cleanly separate the two sections and pigtail the left section on the side of your head.

2. On the right section, separate the top of your hair into three sections. Dutch braids are basically the inverse of a French braid, so instead of pulling the pieces of hair under one another, push them on top. Or, if it’s easier to think of it this way, start French braiding and then do the opposite. The right piece goes under the middle and then the left under the middle, while adding more hair from the root.

3. Work that pattern until you’ve reached the end of your hair & secure with an elastic tie. Un-pigtail the left section and repeat.

MAKING YOU BLUSH the best finds for any skin tone

IMG_2883I have never really been a makeup kind of gal. Truthfully, I don’t really know what I am doing. Between some moisturizer, a little mascara, & a good shade of lipstick, I feel pretty well rounded and it takes me less than 30 seconds, so you can’t really beat that. Recently, between Breann’s beauty column, our guest contributors, and the experts sharing their secrets from Stylisted, I have started to expand my daily beauty routine a bit & have found my secret weapon – blush

I know, I know this might be old news to you, but what I mean is that I actually started caring about it. By that I mean, using blush that compliments my skin tone & started applying it with an actual brush & not my fingers. So, we got our blush-guru, Christina Gauthier from Stylisted, to show us how to up our beauty game.

IMG_2860

Depending on your skin tone, these shades of blush will compliment your already radiant skin:

Gold/Olive undertones: Go for something with orange tones or slightly reddish pinks. They will help highlight your brightness.

Pink undertones: For a natural look, stick with light pink but for something a bit more dramatic try peach. It compliments your coloring and gives you a healthy glow.

So, for those of you (like me) who had no idea how to apply blush (think those pink circles dolls have on their cheeks), Christine says to sweep it along your cheekbones (if you don’t know where they are, suck in your cheeks & see what stands out) and extend the color up to your temples.

Put on a little more than you think to give you a natural glow that goes more chic than “just came in from the gym.” So, what do you think? We are tucking away our bronzer for another season & getting back to our blushing basics!
