3 WAYS TO STAY HEALTHY DESPITE A BUSY SCHEDULE

It’s easy to dream about keeping a schedule that’s perfectly balanced between self-care and being productive on a calm Sunday afternoon. However, as soon as the work week starts and things get a little crazy, all of that self-care and balance usually tends to go out the window. Most of us almost always fall back into old habits as soon as things become a little bit challenging. So how do you combat that? How do you set yourself up for a successful week even when you’re super busy? Here are three simple tips that can make a world of difference.

 

START YOUR MORNING IN A PEACEFUL WAY

Instead of waking up and immediately checking your email, pause and take a few deep breaths. This small change will make such a big difference in the way you feel throughout the day. If you want to take it a step further, try not to check your phone until you’ve gotten out of bed and stepped into the other room. Giving yourself space from the outside world and all of your responsibilities will help you feel more calm and grounded as you begin your day.

 

BE PREPARED WITH HEALTHY SNACKS

Eating well when you’re really busy can be challenging. That’s why it’s so important to have a little bit of foresight and to plan ahead, especially when you know you’re going to have a crazy week. Have your desk or bag stocked with a couple of healthy snack options at all times. This could be anything from fresh fruit to your favorite nut (preferably unsalted), or a minimally processed protein bar. Making sure you have healthy snacks allows you to make better choices when you get hungry in the middle of the day and you’re pressed for time. A little bit of planning can really go a long way here.

 

TAKE TIME TO REST

Amidst your busy schedule it can be really easy to forget the value of downtime, but don’t be mistaken, it’s incredibly important! Carving out a little bit of intentional downtime every night (yes, every night!) will absolutely help you be well and stay well. I say intentional downtime because it’s very different from mindlessly falling down an internet rabbit hole and staring at your phone for 30 minutes. When your resting time is intentional it allows your mind and body to get on board with one another which will help you really chill out. You can read, listen to music, even just spend time drinking a cup of tea and chatting with your partner or friend- the sky’s the limit as long as you feel relaxed.

 

There you have it! Three ways to be well even with a busy schedule. No matter how much you have going on, I’m confident you can make the time to take a deep breath in the morning, buy some healthy snacks, and take a few minutes to rest in the evening. Trust me, you’ll be glad you did.

3 TIPS TO FEEL GREAT THIS SPRING

You’ve probably done a spring cleaning in your home, your beauty regime, or at least attempted a spring refresh, but have you considered doing one for your lifestyle? Just like it’s important to live in a clean space, it’s important to live with a body and mind that feel clean as well. Today I’m sharing 3 tips to help you feel great this spring.

ONE | REFLECT & SET GOALS

Take some time to take a step back and look at where you are in your life. Reflect on what feels good, what feels tolerable and what absolutely needs to change. Once you’re clear on those things set goals based on what you’d like to let go of this spring and what new things you’d like to invite into your life. Write those goals down and make sure to check in with in throughout the next couple of months to keep yourself on track.

TWO | DO ONE THING A DAY THAT HELPS YOU FEEL CENTERED

We all have actives that help us feel centered. Do you know what works for you? This spring, commit to taking time every single day to do at least one thing that helps you feel centered. Personally I find that movement really centers me so I make sure I do yoga, go for a walk or dance in my living room pretty much every single day. Committing to doing this daily will help you feel refreshed and empowered.

THREE | CLEAN UP THOSE HABITS

Do you have any habits that you’d be better off without? Maybe you check social media too often, maybe you’re eating too much sugar or maybe you bombard yourself with negative self-talk. Whatever habits you have that are holding you back from feeling great, now is the time to notice them and let them go. Just like a good springtime closet clean out, clearing out these habits will help you put your best foot forward and really feel amazing this spring!

5 WAYS TO FOCUS ON WELLNESS

image185New Year’s is always the time to make resolutions, set goals, and re-commit to life changing habits, but I always feel that way about Spring. The snow has melted, the birds are started to chirp, warm weather is slowing sneaking in, and I always feel re-energized to set goals and make things happen.

This season, we are all about wellness. Not wellness in terms of the latest fitness trend, but wellness in terms of mind, body, and spirit. We are trying to take time for ourselves, put healthy boundaries around commitments, and do things away from our computers that inspire us. So, naturally, I wanted to share five ways we are focusing on our wellness!

ONE: Schedule some “you time”

Personally, I love baths. I love alone time & I love taking 20 minutes to slip into a bath, away from screens, and unwind (a glass of wine doesn’t hurt the process). But, much like you, “me time” is the first to go when things get busy & life gets hectic.

I encourage you to make “me time” as important as those happy hours with friends. Without dedicated time carved out in your schedule to be alone, pamper yourself, or indulge in something (a good book, a dance class, lunch at the museum, etc.) there is a tendency to burn out, get stressed out, or exhaust oneself. Cut that terrible cycle off by making time for yourself. It doesn’t have to be a ton of time, maybe just 15 minutes a day just doing something that you love. Try it out & see how it changes things.

TWO: Feed your body well

Natalie, our fabulous Health & Wellness contributor talks a lot about checking in with your body after meals & asking yourself how you feel after eating. To me, this is better than any dieting trick because when you choose to feed your body well, your body feels really good & wants to keep going & kicking ass right alongside you.

A lot of times we are so busy thinking about other things that we don’t realize how we feel after we eat.  If you take a moment after a meal to notice how you feel it can be extremely informative. This will allow you to make choices in the future based on feeling rather than guidelines that you follow. You will know that after you three slices of pizza you feel bloated and tired and after you eat a salad with salmon and avocado you feel satiated and energized. Therefore the next time you are presented with the opportunity to choose what you want to eat you can remember how you felt after you ate that specific thing. Making a decision is a lot easier when it comes from a place of feeling as opposed to from remembering what’s on your list of “yes” foods and “no” foods.

THREE: Simplify your beauty routine

FOUR: Be intentional

If there is one thing I want to improve in my wellness routine, it’s becoming more intentional about my time & less anxious about my to-do list. Okay, well technically that’s two, but, to me, they go hand in hand.

We are pulling a page out of Yoga’s book and trying to set intentions for our day. Meditating on these intentions throughout the day help with emotional stability (meaning, they calm our anxious minds) and stress reduction. It is important to set an intention rather than a goal, because intentions happen from the inside where goals are more external. Intentions can be anything from, “I intend to make someone smile today” to “I intend to let myself be happy.” Coming back to those intentions when things get out of hand, hard to handle, or so messy you just want to give up, will help center you, re-focus your mind, and give you the calming kick in the butt to keep going that you needed.

FIVE: Fill your mind with good things

 It’s tempting to come home after a long day & turn on the TV and zone out a bit. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good Netflix binge-watch session, but sometimes it’s better to turn the TV off and fill your mind with things other than the latest House of Cards season.

Pour a glass of wine, slip into something more comfortable, and spent the night reading something good. Whether it’s the latest New Yorker or something random off your bookshelf, it’s important to expose yourself to new things. Boost your imagination and creativity, get inspired to do something new, or indulge in a little self improvement, no matter the reason, reading allows you to unplug & unwind while stimulating your brain in a new way!

THE POWER OF SAYING ‘NO’

Natalie here and today I’m sharing something that will potentially save you from burning out in the new year. Learning to art of saying ‘no’ to the things that aren’t right for you is so important to your overall well-being, but it’s not the easiest thing in the world for most of us.

I want to point out something VERY IMPORTANT that a lot of people don’t realize: Every ‘no’ is a ‘yes’ to something else. For instance, if you say ‘no’ to a relationship that isn’t healthy for you, you’re actually saying ‘yes’ to the possibility of the right relationship entering your life. 

‘No’ gets such a bad wrap because it’s often perceived as negative or shutting down  possibilities. But when used correctly, saying ‘no’ can be as powerful and uplifting as saying ‘yes’.

With the holiday season behind us, new years resolutions are starting to enter our mind. This is the time of year where we can start anew and get off on the right foot. It’s important not to overextend ourselves so we don’t end up running on empty.

Two big reasons we end up saying ‘yes’ when we really mean ‘no’ are:

  1. The desire to be liked/nice
  2. Fear of missing out on opportunities

YOU WANT TO BE WELL LIKED:

For the most part, we all want to be liked, it’s a normal human desire. But here’s a question: Who’s more likable than a person who actually wants to be where they are? You might find yourself saying ‘yes’ to plans and party invites or even work commitments because you want the people involved to like you for showing up; but are you really all that likable when you’re not happy with your choices? Probably not. Being real and knowing when to say ‘no’ allows you the opportunity to be the best version of yourself. Then people can actually trust your ‘yes’, knowing that you are totally happy with the commitments you’ve agreed to. 

YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS OUT!:

There’s a lot of talk about saying ‘yes’ to life… and that’s great! You do want to say ‘yes’ to life, and be open to possibilities, but don’t forget the very important thing I mentioned at the beginning of this post: Every ‘no’ is a ‘yes’ to something else. Just because you  utter the word ‘no’ doesn’t mean you’re rejecting life, in fact it could mean that you are embracing it so wholly that you are allowing yourself the full experience, as opposed to one where you are terrified of doing what you actually want to do. So go ahead, say ‘no’ to the next thing that doesn’t feel right for you and remember you’re actually saying ‘yes’ to what you really want. When you think of it that way, there are no opportunities to be lost

There you have it. Saying ‘no’ when that’s what feels right will actually make you more pleasant to be around, and it will also open up new doors to the things you actually want to experience in your life. Remember the power of ‘no’ and you’ll prevent yourself from totally burning out.
