Grapefruit Whiskey Sour via Lauren KelpWell, howdy party people! Hope your week is getting off to a fun start. We don’t normally share cocktails on Tuesdays but I thought I would make an exception for all of you who are hosting a dinner party, happy hour, get-together or just need a fun drink to spice up the week!

I am hosting a fun little gals get-together on Thursday and wanted to whip up a cocktail that was delicious, unexpected, and , to be honest, had a pretty color & this Grapefruit Whiskey Sour totally fits the bill. Slightly sweet thanks to the Whiskey, a little tart from the grapefruit, & a whole lot of delicious. This will turn anyone who says they aren’t a Whiskey drinker into a believer – that I can promise you!

Literally pour in some Whiskey (but, treat yourself & make it a good Whiskey, specifically Michter’s – you deserve it), some chilled grapefruit soda (Trader Joe’s or your local grocery store has a great one), pop in some ice, & add some lemon wedges and you are good to go!

Couldn’t be easier, couldn’t be more delicious, and couldn’t be more fun to make. You are well on your way to become Master of the Home Bar – I can feel it!

THE BOURBON SIDECAR summer is better with bourbon

There is something about bourbon in the summertime that just seems to make everything alright. You know what I mean? If you’ve been following along, you know that we have been exploring the realms of whiskey based cocktails over the past few months with the help of our friends at Michter’s & it’s been a blast. I always thought of whiskey & bourbon as cooler weather spirits but thanks to gems like today’s Bourbon Sidecar – I have been proved wrong.

Do yourself a favor – swing by and pick up a bottle of Michter’s Bourbon, call some friends over this weekend, and whip up a few of these Sidecars. Ridiculously easy to make & always delicious, the Bourbon Sidecars are quickly becoming a “sip on the patio” weekend drink at the Kelp house. Give it a try & tell us what you think!

Recipe type: Cocktail

THE WHISKEY ROSE could anything be prettier?

IMG_3022It’s Friday, Friday, gotta get down on Friday. Remember that song? Sorry for getting it stuck in your head but to make up for it how about a little inspiration to get through your last work day of the week?! Meet the cocktail that will make you love whiskey (if you don’t already). It’s the Whiskey Rose and we are in love. There is nothing rose flavored about the cocktail, it gets that name because of it’s color (it’s much more pink in person because of the grapefruit juice) and it’s just such a darling cocktail, we can’t help but feel ‘rose’ describes it’s adorable personality.

Made with our favorite whiskey, Michter’s, this lovely lady is smooth, refreshing, and perfect to celebrate the weekend! So make a quick stop to the store, round up some friends, and host a little post-work/pre-weekend happy hour – you won’t be disappointed! IMG_3048

APRICOT WHISKEY SMASH - LAUREN KELPOh dear friends. It is indeed the weekend and celebrate we must! I’ve only recently jumped on this whiskey train, and I must admit I waited way too long. I can’t say I’m tough enough to order a Johnny Walker straight up, I can definitely get behind a good whiskey based cocktail.

The best thing about this particular concoction? It’s super simple! We here at believe that eating, drinking, and entertaining is, above all else, supposed to be fun! You’ve heard us say it a million times – who cares if the sauce is runny or the chicken is  little burnt? Having friends and family there to laugh off the mishaps with is truly the best part!

So if you’re anything like me and prone to drop the ball every now and then (i.e. forget to thaw the meat in time or over-salt the brussel sprouts) be sure to have this yummy little cocktail up your sleeve! It’s easy, refreshing, and a mega crowd pleaser!

-5 fresh mint leaves

-1/2 oz. fresh lemon juice

-1 apricot cut into wedges

-3/4 oz. simple syrup

-2 oz. Knob Creek Whiskey

-1 sprig fresh mint

-In a cocktail shaker, muddle the mint leaves, lemon juice, apricot wedges, and simple syrup.

-Add whiskey and ice to shaker.

-Shake vigorously for 30 seconds.

-Strain cocktail through a fine strainer into a cocktail glass (over ice if desired).

-Garnish with fresh mint sprig.
