Remember that fun Bridesmaid’s Brunch shoot we did a while back with all of those AMAZING loungewear pieces? Remember how you were like, “Shoot, I really need to step up my pajama game.” Well meet the insanely talented mastermind behind the collection, Courtney Cates. Courtney is the Owner & Designer of Maison du Soir – a gorgeous loungewear & pajama company based in California. I am so in love with her collections. The cuts are perfectly feminine & the pieces are wonderfully designed so you can wear them out or around the house. Don’t just take my word for it, Martha Stewart loves them too!

How long have you been a full time Creative?
Two years for my business and in merchandising for men’s apparel for 10 years prior
What is your day-to-day work routine like?
My day starts with any urgent matters via email. Then I usually head out to one of my vendors (pattern maker, sewing, knit factory). Web orders or account orders are reviewed and packed in the afternoon and then I start to tackle my “to do” list with anything listed that is less urgent. My days are always different and always crazy.
Best part about being a business owner?
Doing something I absolutely love and for myself. If my business succeeds, I succeed.
What is the key to making a fool proof, creative, yet professional outfit?
I like to pair opposites like a classic, maybe conservative silk top with leather pants. Or if I’m wearing a nice pair of trousers I’ll pair it with a funky top. When I wear bold prints, I’ll pair it with thin and feminine jewelry and when my outfit is a little more understated, I kick it up with some statement jewelry pieces. It’s always been about opposites for me. I think they end up creating a nice balanced outfit…professional yet stylish, intelligent and creative.
Any tips for having a well-balanced closet?
For me it’s about the accessories because my clothing is always fairly simple. I think it starts with a great pair of flats and heels and a nice bag. Also with simple, understated clothing, I like to make sure I have unique jewelry. With this as your foundation, a white tee and leather pants or black jeans and a classic silk blouse can take you anywhere.
